Our ICF Virginia Charter Chapter has previously explored Adult Development Theory with Pamela Potts, as well as Navigating Polarities, with Kelly Lewis. Whether you were able to join these sessions or not, you won’t want to miss this next installment of these developmental frameworks that visits both topics - together!
In this session participants will discuss polarities that “define” stages. Some of the fundamental developmental tasks at each stage of adult development involve becoming more skilled at managing polarities. A polarity is a problem that can’t be solved, it can only be continuously managed, either skillfully…or not. It also has two interdependent parts that can’t exist separately. For example, the Expert/3/4/Skill-Centric stage is almost defined by its focus on perfection; good enough not being good enough. The Achiever/4/Self-Determining stage can be defined by the heroic (and often losing) struggle to create or maintain a good work/life balance. When a person begins to struggle with the polarity as they see it at their current stage, they are doing work that can move them along the adult development continuum. As coaches, how do we help facilitate that movement? We will convene in small group discussions to look at the coaching questions that can help illuminate for coachees, the developmental task in front of them and how to more skillfully manage the polarity that is no longer working for them.
In this session, participants will be able to:
- Describe stage-based polarities
- Discuss how managing stage-based polarities can help stage transitions
- Ask coaching questions designed to help coachees navigate stage-based polarities

Pamela works with leaders who are interested in developing and deepening their own leadership style and presence. Pamela transitioned to coaching and human resources after 10 years in accounting. This rare combination of skills places her in a unique position as a coach, equally skilled in the “language of business” and the challenging “soft skills” that can derail leaders.
Pamela specializes in coaching senior leaders in the technology, accounting and finance and not-for-profit industries. Her clients are leaders who describe themselves as life-long learners that want to be able to handle complexity, ambiguity and rapid change with thoughtful, deliberate choices that maximize the outcomes for all stakeholders.
Pamela has a Bachelor of Science in Management and a Master of Science in Accounting degree. She also earned a CPA designation early in her career. Pamela graduated from Georgetown University’s Leadership Coaching Certification program in 2007 and holds a PCC certification from the International Coach Federation. She also holds an SPHR designation from HRCI. She is certified to administer the Leadership Circle Profile, MBTI, Thomas Kilmann conflict assessment instrument, and Maturity Assessment Profile (MAP). She leads a virtual community of practice focused on Adult Development. She is a skilled facilitator, workshop leader and conference speaker.
