Presenter: Lynn Meinke

As a coach, have you ever worked with a client that you thought might benefit from the services of a mental health professional? What behaviors or signs gave you that idea? How sure were you about your observations? How comfortable were you when you realized you needed to address what you were noticing with the client?

The 2015 ICF Code of Ethics states that as a coach, you: “…suggest (your) client seek the services of other professionals when deemed necessary or appropriate.” [Section 3: #23] and that there are times when confidentiality will be broken including when a client is of “imminent or likely risk of danger to self or to others…” [Section 4: #26]. However, no further directions are given on how to discern if, when or how to do this.

Join this enlivening presentation that will highlight behaviors and signs to pay attention to and how to work with a client to come to the realization that professional mental health care would be a benefit.

Objectives for attending this class

  • Learn how to identify when clients may need a referral to a mental health professional
  • Discover how to stay in the coaching frame while working with a client so that the client actually refers him/herself
  • Explore other referral resources that can be used for coaching clients
  • Increase your confidence, comfort and professionalism when managing difficult situations that may require referrals to mental health professionals
  • Decrease the chance that you are working/practicing outside the field of coaching
